About

The Yale AIDS Memorial Project (YAMP) is an alumni-led initiative to honor and document the lives of hundreds of men and women from the University who perished during the AIDS epidemic. YAMP will pay homage to the deceased—students, faculty, and staff—by creating profiles with their biographies and photos, along with stories from their friends and family. By telling the story of AIDS through the lens of a single institution, YAMP will make the epidemic palpable for a younger generation and help to stimulate an AIDS memory boom.

In all likelihood, more Yalies died of AIDS than died during World War II. Until now, however, no attempt has been made to memorialize or document Yale’s history with the AIDS epidemic.

Each profile on this site consists of photographs, a mini-biography, a list of extracurricular and post-graduate affiliations, and, most importantly, personal stories from friends and family. The site’s functionality approximates that of a social network, allowing users to search against a number of variables, including class year, group membership, and profession.

YAMP is a vast and ambitious collaboration of volunteers and supporters, and we’d love for you to join us.

Profiles/RobertLancasterHoskins

Robert Lancaster Hoskins (CC ’60) was born on August 3, 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended Cincinnati Country Day School. A member of Calhoun College, he majored in political science and was assistant manager to the varsity basketball team. Though upon graduation he aspired to a career in public relations, he followed a decidedly different career path. After a brief stint at the Hartford Insurance Company, he taught at the Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, Massachusetts, and at the Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, New York, before earning an M.Ed. from the University of Cincinnati in 1968.

Hoskins later moved to New York, where he met nightlife impresario Erv Raible. Together, Hoskins and Raible bought and managed the Duplex Cabaret and Piano Bar in the West Village. The pair brought many big names to Duplex, including Woody Allen and Joan Rivers; renowned comedian and talk show host Dick Cavett (YC ’58) made his first New York appearances there. Together, Hoskins and Raible assumed ownership of several such venues including Don’t Tell Mama and Brandy’s, and became a powerful force behind the ongoing revitalization of New York’s cabaret scene.

Robert Hoskins died on December 23, 1984 at age 46.

Profiles/JorgeEnriqueGarciaRodriguez

Jorge Enrique Garcia Rodriguez ’70 was born in Havana, Cuba on August 22, 1948. In 1961, his parents moved to Maine, where they practiced general medicine. Jorge graduated from Milo High School in 1966 before majoring in Art History at Yale, where he was a member of Saybrook College. While at Yale, Jorge participated in Gymnastics, the Yale Political Union, the Yale College Council, the Saybrook Dramat, and the Cheerleading team;

His artistic works as an undergraduate were consistently sexual or relating to a life of pleasure, with his cartoonist-like paintings including such titles as “Amorous Octopi” and “A Harlot’s Series.” Although provocative in nature, Jorge’s work earned him the Art Department’s Best Senior Painting Prize upon graduation. Following commencement, he moved to Manhattan alongside fellow classmates Robert Endo, Douglass Smith and Richard Arnold.

In 1975, Jorge abandoned art and pursued a career in publishing. Following a brief stint in architectural publication, Jorge began work at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich publishers, where he specialized in the production of foreign language materials, specifically Spanish textbooks. A member of the Islanders Club, Jorge and his partner Danny Goggin, a writer of Broadway musicals, annually rented a home at the Pines in Fire Island.

He died in the spring of 1989 of AIDS related complications.

He was 41 years old.

In 1966, he graduated from the Latin School of Chicago before obtaining his BA in English from Yale in 1970. Following his diagnosis-driven-departure, Smith became active in the New York City Chapter of the People With AIDS Coalition, often attending social events at the local community center.
Gerald Olanoff

Profiles/GeraldOlanoff

Gerald (Jerry) Bruce Olanoff was born on December 11, 1952, he was raised on Long Island and later in Queens before attending Yale, where he graduated in 1974. He moved to Manhattan where he met his partner Ron Csuha, an artist. Olanoff then pursued a master’s degree in architecture at Columbia University, receiving it in 1977. During those three years, Olanoff became active in in National Gay Task Force.

Olanoff spent several years working at the firm of Phillip Johnson and John Burgee, but was not satisfied with his progress as an architect there. He moved to Davis, Brody & Associates in 1979; Here, Olanoff was much more comfortable and became project architect for the design of new conservatories and the renovation of the old conservatory at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden which were completed in 1988. He was also a project architect for the renovation of the old Bird House at the Bronx Zoo but had to leave this when he was no longer able to work because of AIDS.

Olanoff was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986, and started getting major health problems in 1991. Davis Brody was very supporting of gay architects and luckily Olanoff was able to continue working longer than most because of this support. Even after his diagnosis, Olanoff was made an associate of the firm.

On April 3, 1994, Olanoff was featured in a New York Times article on the effect of AIDS of architecture firms: AIDS and the Practice of Architecture, written by his friend David W. Dunlap.

While working for Davis Brody, he was also able to work on the design of homes for private clients in New York, Massachusetts, and in the Pines on Fire Island. Five of these houses were built in a modern style using traditional materials of wood and stone to achieve large double height spaces to serve as living rooms. The plans for the design of these houses are archived at the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library at Columbia University.

In 1983, Jerry became a founding member of the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in Greenwich Village, and headed the architecture committee to deal with design problems in the building acquired by the Center, the former Food and Maritime High School on 13th Street in Greenwich Village, NYC. The committee was responsible for the building’s first renovation, which began in 1995.

Olanoff was an outspoken activist who disliked having had to hide his identity so much so that his life seemed to truly embodied the ACT UP slogan “Silence is Death.” He was highly indignant at the ways gays were treated during his life, chiefly among these treatments being the way a family of one partner could legally confiscate assets of his or her gay union. Though he was an activist, he was not a member of ACT UP, but greatly appreciated their work. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he and his partner Ron marched regularly with Act Up in the annual Gay Parade.

Olanoff died on October 22, 1995 from AIDS related complications. He was 42 years old.

In 1966, the Spizzwinks(?) went to Venezuela and toured universities and hotels with the help of the U.S. government and Creole Oil. In 1967, he auditioned and was selected to act in a mobile theater program funded by Urban Corps, a federal program to give students summer jobs in New York City. When the Urban Corps director decided his idea was infeasible, Yale students took it over and ran the Mini-Mobile Theater themselves. John helped rally resources from municipal agencies and then built sets onto the project’s sixteen-foot flatbed truck. He became a manager, setting up stages and driving actors to the performances. John was selected in 1968 by the Yale-in-China Association to teach for two years at New Asia College in Hong Kong graduated from the University of Buffalo Medical School in 1974. He entered family medicine, then a new type of medical specialty, and worked at New York City’s Family Care Center.

He was a member of the American Fern Society.

John Tardino died in the early-to-mid 1980s in New York City.

Dan Friedman was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1945. From the Midwest, Friedman went to college at Carnegie Mellon, where he received his BFA in Graphic Design. Following his undergraduate career, Friedman journeyed to Basel, where he studied orthodox modernist graphic design at the Schule für Gestaltung. He returned to the United States in 1969, marking the beginning of his career as a graphic design instructor for major corporations and institutions. From 1970-1973, Friedman taught Graphic Design at Yale, in addition to holding teaching posts at the State University College at Purchase, N.Y., and at Cooper Union. He also held positions at Anspach Grossman Portugal, where he was a senior designer from 1975-1977. While working for Pentagram (during the years of 1979 to 1984), he designed posters, letterheads and logos for clients including Citibank and Williwear. In 1982, he designed a book for his dear friend Keith Haring and worked for the Neotu Gallery. In 1994, he published “Radical Modernism,” a lavishly illustrated text which meditated on the constraints of post-modernity. He died on July 7, 1995 at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in Manhattan.
Terence Beirn

Profiles/TerenceBeirn

Terence Beirn was born in New York City in 1952. Before attending Yale, Beirn graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy. After earning his Bachelor’s in 1974, Beirn pursued a career in broadcast journalism, becoming a correspondent for KGO in San Francisco until 1984.

That same year, he was diagnosed with AIDS.

Following his diagnosis, Beirn began working with Senator Ted Kennedy on AIDS policy. In 1986, Beirn committed himself entirely to the organization of major AIDS legislation by joining the staff of the US Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources. During his time there, Beirn garnered support for the first comprehensive piece of AIDS legislation, the 1988 HIV Organ Policy Equity Act. The HOPE Act, which was renewed by President Obama in 2013, is a law that modified rules regarding organ donation between HIV-positive individuals. Two years later, Beirn was instrumental in the passage of the Ryan White Care Act, for which he advocated directly with President Bush.

Beirn was a fierce AIDS activist; he was responsible for compiling quarterly directories of AIDS treatment for doctors and patients, fund-raising for AmFAR and other research organizations, and pushing legislation to fund clinical trials of experimental treatments and drugs.

Beirn died at the age of 39 in 1991 from AIDS-related brain cancer.
