John R. Connolly was born in Bronxville, NY in 1939. Growing up between Yonkers and Kent, Connecticut, Connolly eventually pursued an undergraduate degree at Illinois Wesleyan University. After graduation, Connolly–a conscientious objector– fulfilled his military services as a volunteer for the World Health Organization, where he worked on contraceptive programs in China; Before serving as the associate director of development at the Yale School of Medicine in 1983, he was a senior development officer and director of corporate relations at NYU, where he started his career as a professional fund-raiser for charitable causes and educational institutions. He served as associate director of the Rockefeller University from 1983-1986 and development director of the Skin Cancer Foundation from 1987-1989 1989, he assumed the same role at God’s Love We Deliver, an AIDS service organization, where he doubled their fund-raising efforts to $1.5 million annually. A consultant to the Melanoma Vaccine Project at NYU Medical Center at the time of his death, Connolly died of AIDS related complications on December 11, 1992;
