Peter Schifter

Peter Mark Schifter was born in 1949 in Cranbury, NJ. In 1970, he graduated from Ohio University with a degree in theater. Schifter went on to study at the Yale School of Drama, after which he began a prolific career as a theater, opera and television director. His first professional work was Joseph Beber’s Rumpelstiltskin, which opened at the Pennsylvania Opera. Following his directorial debut, Evans began a nationally-acclaimed career, premiering productions at the Houston Grand Opera, the Long Beach Opera House, the Central City Opera in Colorado, the Edmonton Opera in Alberta the Seattle Opera House, among other locations. In 1989, his work on the musical “Welcome to the Club” earned him a Tony Award Nomination. Later in his career, he began directing after-school-special television programs and daytime dramas such as ABC’s “One Life to Live.” He died on September 10, 1993 at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.

He was 44 years old.
