Michael Alvin Barnett was born on November 28, 1945 in New York, NY. He attended the Lawrenceville School before enter­ing Yale in 1963, where he was a mem­ber of Jonathan Edwards College, sang in the Glee Club, and majored in marine biology.

After grad­u­at­ing in 1967, he went on to receive his doc­tor­ate from the Scripps Oceano­graphic Insti­tute and later lived in Washington, DC, where he worked as an ecologist for Hen­ning­son, Durham, and Richard­son, an archi­tec­tural, engi­neer­ing, and con­sult­ing firm. 

He died on December 21, 1988 at the age of 43.
